Rural Social Scheme
The aim of the Rural Social Scheme is to provide an additional source of income to low income farmers who are in receipt of specified, social welfare payments. Qualifying farmers are employed to provide certain services of benefit to rural communities by harnessing the skills and talents available.
Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants must be a member of a farm household, be actively farming and be in receipt of one of the following payments from the Department of Social Protection:
- Farm Assist
- Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Jobseeker’s Benefit (if previously on FAS C.E. or RSS)
- Disability Allowance
- Recipients of One-Parent Family payments
- Widow(ers) Pension (contributory and non-contributory)
Terms of the RSS
Participants work 19.5 hours per week
Work is generally organised according to a farmer friendly flexible schedule
Contracts are issued on an annual basis
Type of Work Undertaken
- Projects relating to maintenance and enhancement of waymarked ways, agreed walks, bog roads etc.
- Energy conservation work for elderly and less well off;
- Village and countryside enhancement projects;
- Social care and care of the elderly, community after-school support groups and community pre-schooling support groups;
- Environmental maintenance work, maintenance and caretaking of community and sporting facilities;
- Projects relating to not for profit cultural and heritage centres;
- Community administration/Clerical duties
- Any other appropriate community-based projects that may be identified during the course of the scheme
