Monaghan Integrated Development is Local Development Company funded by the Irish Government and charged with the delivery of a range of programmes whose aim is to support specific target groups with a view to making a positive difference in their lives.
The company was set up in late 2008 as part of the process of restructuring of the local development sector nationally. The process, referred to as cohesion, was aimed at merging the activities of Area Partnership and LEADER companies under one Local Development Company at county level.
A core role of Monaghan Integration Development is to promote social inclusion, support enterprise development and employment creation, facilitate access to education, training and lifelong learning and assist community groups in identifying needs and developing local solutions.
Integrated Local Development Companies now exist throughout rural Ireland and through programmes of Local and Community Development Programmes
( LCDP, which replaced the LDSIP in January 2010 ) and LEADER, they have an important role in developing innovative responses to local problems, and in building local capabilities to address local needs and develop local resources and services.
All Local Development Companies share a common goal in seeking to improve local governance – that is, the way society collectively addresses and solves its problems and meets its needs.
The main objective of the new Integrated Development Companies as outlined by our governing body, the Department of Community, Equality & Gaeltacht Affairs is: to promote, support, assist and engage in
(a) social development
(b) enterprise development to facilitate rural regeneration
(c) community development, designed to benefit and promote the welfare of local communities or to deal with the causes and consequences of social and economic disadvantage or poverty.
It is now widely recognised that the multi-dimensional nature of social exclusion is such that tackling one in isolation is unlikely to address the core problem. Individuals or communities experiencing disadvantage or lack of opportunity often require a more holistic approach which addresses a broader range of issues like education, health, accommodation, core skills and employment. This is where a partnership approach provides a vehicle for greater integration and collaboration in approaches to addressing key socio-economic issues through the involvement of statutory agencies, public representatives, employers and social partners and the community & voluntary sector proves so valuable.
Our approach is to encourage socio-economic players to work together, to produce goods and services that create maximum added value in the county. This can be achieved by working closely with statutory agencies and service providers and where possible complementing their services, and helping them extend their reach further into local communities.
