After School Activity Clubs (ASAC)
The After School Activity Clubs operate at primary level, and their aim is to provide additional support to disadvantaged young people in a safe environment after school. Typically they are run one evening per week from the school building, and provide group and one-to-one homework support as well as a range of recreational activities aimed at helping young people to develop their skills and self-confidence.
Family School Liaison Service
The overall aim of the Family School Liaison Service is to provide a direct link between the home and school for students that have been identified as ‘at risk of early school leaving’ and provide appropriate measures of support for these young people and their families.
The schools availing of the service refer students to the Family School Liaison Officer for any of the following reasons:
• Poor attendance at school • Difficulties settling into the school environment • Evidence of behavioral problems • Learning difficulties • History of early school leaving in the family • Lack of motivation • Lack of organizational skills • Lack of resources and opportunities outside the school environment • Social and/or economic difficulties • Integration issues
Second Level Homework Clubs
Financial support is currently provided to three homework clubs in second level schools in the county - Monaghan Collegiate School, St Louis Secondary School Monaghan and St Macartans College Monaghan. These clubs are aimed at promoting positive attitudes to school as well as building self-confidence and self-esteem. The long-term objective is that young people attending the club will maximize their learning capacity, develop a structured study routine, increase communication skills and ultimately improve academic performance.
Personal Enhancement Programme
The Patrician High School, Carrickmacross is supported financially to run the Personal Enhancement Programme which is a targeted intervention for young males at risk of underachieving and/or early school leaving. On a weekly basis, targeted students have support meetings with the project worker to review homework, to resolve any issues arising, to set goals and monitor attendance.
Student Support Programme
The Student Support Programme which runs in St Louis Secondary School, Carrickmacross, specifically targets young females at risk of underachieving and/or early school leaving. This project provides active support and encouragement to targeted students on a weekly basis including a scheduled support meeting to set and monitor goals. It also promotes active cooperation between the home and school so as to enhance the parents’ capacity to support the students’ educational progress.
