Peace III Project makes a splash in Fermanagh Lakelands!
On Thursday June 17th members of Monaghan U3A (University of the 3rd Age) met with members of Erne U3A for a Peace Building Workshop in the Share Centre, Lisnaskea, Co.Fermanagh. The event was facilitated by Malcolm Totten and Eamonn Callaghan of Monaghan U3A who recently completed Leadership in Peace Building Training through the Peace III Project for Older People. The idea behind the event was to build positive relations at local level in a cross border cross community context. From the day the group aimed to promote and foster enduring cooperation between U3A groups in Monaghan and those in the neighbouring county of Fermanagh.
In the course of the day the group travelled down Lough Erne on the Inishcruiser and visited the beautiful Crom Castle before returning to the Share centre for dinner and an exchange of experiences. The Monaghan U3A group wish to extend their gratitude to the representatives of the Erne U3A for joining them on the day in particular to Anna Cochrance of Erne U3A for the assistance she provided in establishing the link between the two groups and to the Share Centre for the excellent service they provided on the day.
The excellent prospects arising from their time together should serve to deepen the links between both groups further into the future; indeed already steps are being taken by the Monaghan U3A group to facilitate a visit to and explore the heritage of Monaghan town by the Heritage group of Erne U3A in the autumn. Eamonn O’Callaghan of Monaghan U3A extended his gratitude to ‘all the participants there on the day and to Monaghan Integrated Development and in particular to Laura Caslin Peace III Project Worker for Older People for facilitating such a successful cross border event. The camaraderie and contacts of the day are a practical expression of peace building as they help to build positive cross border cross community relations in a local context’.
